Global Protect VPN Portals

Overview

The GlobalProtect VPN client from Palo Alto Networks can be used to connect to Thompson Rivers University network and provides access to resources as if you were physically connected to the network on campus.  You will need to install the Global Protect VPN client on your laptop. 

Here are detailed instructions for installing or upgrading the client. 

NOTE: This does not need to be completed on a TRU desktop computer.  The VPN will not connect while using a physical Ethernet connection on campus.

Once the client is installed, there are several VPN portals available:

Portal Address Details

vpn.tru.ca

Student General use
Remote Access to Labs on campus
Multifactor Authentication not required

vpn.tru.ca

Contractor Use - some resources require Multifactor Authentication (requested through an ASAR)
Non Employee General Use

vpn-tru.gpcloudservice.com

Faculty and Staff General use

Ensure that you have been enrolled for and have setup Multifactor Authentication before connecting

To add the new VPN portal to the GlobalProtect Client:

On a Windows computer

  1. From the Windows system tray in the lower right corner of your screen (^), click the GlobalProtect icon.
      
    OR
  2. From the Windows search box (bottom left side of the window), type GlobalProtect. Click GlobalProtect (Desktop app) from the search results.
  3. Click the settings icon stack in the top right of the window that appears and select Settings.
  4. Click the Add button that appears below the list of configured VPN portals.
  5. Enter the portal address (e.g. vpn-tru.gpcloudservice.com) and click Save

On a Macintosh computer

  1. Click the GlobalProtect icon in the system tray (right section of the menu bar that runs along the top of the window where the date/time appears).

    OR
    Use the Finder, click Go from the menu bar, then Applications, then double click GlobalProtect from the Applications window.
  2. Click the gear icon in the top right of the window that appears and select Settings.
  3. Click the + that appears below the list of configured VPN portals.
  4. Enter the portal address (e.g. vpn-tru.gpcloudservice.com) and click Save.

 

To Remove the VPN portal address from the GlobalProtect Client:

On a Windows computer

  3. Click the settings icon stack in the top right of the window that appears and select Settings.
  4. Click on the portal address that you would like to remove (eg. vpn.tru.ca)
  5. Click the Delete button that appears below the list of configured VPN portals.
  6. Click the Delete button again to confirm the removal of the portal

On a Macintosh computer
