Email Forwarding
You can forward your TRU Student E-Mail to an external personal e-mail account to prevent exceeding your Student E-Mail Storage.
Click on "Show" to view the instructions for your mailbox.
How to set up email forwarding
1. In your Mailbox, click on the Settings/Gear Icon in the top-right of the page to open Outlook Settings. Click "View all Outlook Settings" to open a new dialogue with more Outlook Webmail Settings
2. Click Mail in the Left Sidebar and then click on Forwarding in the Mail Settings List
- Ensure there is a Check Mark in the Checkbox for "Enable Forwarding"
3. Enter your personal email address in the box for "Forward my email to:"
- It is recommended to TURN OFF "Keep a copy of forwarded messages". This will prevent your mailbox from filling up. The Forwarding options should look similar to this, with your chosen email added:
4. Click Save at the bottom of the Settings
- Login to Outlook Web Mail at https://mywebmail.mytru.ca/ with your T-ID and myTRU Password
- When you are logged in, look in the top right for the Options menu and click on Options
- Click "Create an Inbox Rule". You should see a pre-made rule: "Redirect MYTRU mail to Personal Mail and Delete Message" or a similar name
- Ensure that it is Checked On, and then click Details
- On the right side, you should see a blue link labelled "Someone@domain.com"
- Click on this email address
- Enter your personal email in the box, replacing the existing email address. Click OK and then save the form, and close it
- If you did not see an existing rule on your mailbox, follow the remaining steps to create a new rule
- Return to the list of Inbox Rules by clicking on Options then "Create an Inbox Rule" from your main mailbox view
- Click on "New" to start creation of a new inbox rule.
- Click the "More Options" button, to enable the settings for forwarding your mail
- Set the option for "Apply this rule..." to "Apply to all messages"
- Set the option for "Do the following" to Forward, redirect, or send > "Forward the message to..." from this menu. This will open the settings for which email account you want to forward to. Enter your personal email in the box, replacing the existing email address if one appears. Click OK to save your settings
- Now, to add another step, to mark the messages as read. Click on the Add Action button. Select Mark the message > "as Read".
- Optionally, you may also enter a custom name for your new rule in the "Name of rule" field. Click Save when finished, and if prompted, click Yes to "Do you want this rule to apply to all future messages?"

Email is now set up to forward to the new address and delete the existing copy from your Student Webmail. This is important, as you have limited space within your Mailbox. All copies are kept in Deleted Items until more space is required, and then they are cleared out.
"Invalid Canary" Error
You may encounter an "Invalid Canary" error message when accessing the Mail Forwarding Rules. This is due to an incompatibility with Chromium-Based Browsers (Google Chrome, Apple Safari, Microsoft Edge, and others). To set your mail forwarding rules, download the Firefox Browser from Mozilla. Once you create rules, or adjust other settings that may trigger this error message, you can return to using the browser of your choice.
