Microsoft OneDrive for TRU is a cloud-based file storage service from Microsoft. OneDrive makes it easy to save, back up, and share your files securely online. This guide explains how to install OneDrive if it is not already installed on your computer and set up the application for first use.

Installing OneDrive

Close any open Microsoft Office programs such as Outlook, Word, or Excel.

Go to the Microsoft OneDrive Download Page using your web browser.

Click the Download button to start downloading the OneDrive installer.

Depending on your browser settings, the installer will download automatically to your Downloads folder, or you will be prompted to choose a location to save it.

Wait for the download to finish, then locate and open the OneDrive installer.

The OneDrive Setup window will open. Wait for the installation to complete.

Setting Up Your OneDrive

When installation is complete, OneDrive may open automatically. If it does not, look for the OneDrive cloud icon in your task tray near the clock.

If you don’t see it, click the Show hidden icons arrow to view hidden icons.

Click the OneDrive icon to open the app and begin setup.

Enter your TRU email address and click Sign In.
- Students: TRU ID number followed by @mytru.ca (Example: T00123456@mytru.ca)
- Employees: username followed by @tru.ca (Example: jsmith@tru.ca)
Enter your TRU password and click Sign In when prompted.

If asked, complete Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) using your preferred method (Microsoft Authenticator or phone approval).

Wait for OneDrive to sign in.
Follow the OneDrive setup steps by clicking Next through each screen to learn how OneDrive works on your computer.

If you see a message that OneDrive is already set up on this computer, click Use this folder. Do not create a new folder.

If prompted to “Get the mobile app,” click Later to continue setup.

When setup is complete, click Open my OneDrive folder to view your synced OneDrive folder.

You can also find it anytime in File Explorer listed as OneDrive – Thompson Rivers University.

OneDrive is now ready to use. Files saved in your OneDrive folder will automatically sync and be available from any device connected to your TRU account.
