Outlook "winmail.dat attachments" Error

Fixing the winmail.dat Error in Outlook:

Sometimes emails sent from Outlook with fancy text (like bold font, italics, font sizes, etc...) don't work well with other email programs. People might get an email they can't open with an attachment called "winmail.dat." Please follow the instructions below to fix this:

  1. Open Outlook on your computer,

  2. Click on "File" at the top left, then choose "Options",

  3. In the Options menu, click on "Mail",

  4. Look for a setting that says “Compose messages in this format” and choose "HTML" from the list,

  5. Further down the same menu, under "Message Format", find “When sending messages in Rich Text format to Internet recipients” and make sure it's set to "Convert to HTML format."
