Your TRU password and security verification methods give you access to most TRU systems. Use this page to set up your account, reset your password, or update MFA options.
Login Formats
Student Login

TRU ID number followed by @mytru.ca
Example: T00123456@mytru.ca
|
Username followed by @tru.ca
Example: jsmith@tru.ca

Password Rules
- it must be between 12 and 20 characters long
- it must include all of the following types of characters: uppercase, lowercase, numeric, symbol
- it is case sensitive
- CANNOT contain three consecutive letters and/or numbers from your TRU ID
- CANNOT contain your name or date of birth
- CANNOT re-use an old password
Once your new password is set, it will remain in effect permanently, unless a security breach or issue is detected by the system.

First time logging in (new students and employees)
- Go to https://myaccount.microsoft.com.
- Sign in with your TRU username
- Enter your default password:
Default Password: TRUddmmmyy(Replace ddmmmyy with your date of birth. For example, September 3, 1991 = TRU03sep91.)
- Follow the on-screen steps to:
- Change your temporary password to a new password that meets TRU rules.
- Set up your security info (Multi-Factor Authentication), such as:
- Microsoft Authenticator app
- Text message or phone call to your mobile phone
- Backup email address (password recovery only)
- Finish all required security steps. Use at least two methods to reduce the chance of being locked out.
I forgot my password or need to change it
- Go to https://myaccount.microsoft.com.
- On the sign-in page, enter your TRU username, then select "Can’t access your account?" or "Forgot my password".
- On the password reset screen:
- Confirm your TRU username.
- Enter the characters shown on the screen.
- Select Next.
- Choose one of your registered verification methods:
- Microsoft Authenticator app notification
- Text message or phone call
- Backup email
- Other available options
- Enter the code or approve the notification.
- Create and confirm a new password that meets TRU requirements.
- Once you see the confirmation message, sign in to TRU services using your new password.
