Connecting with a Chromebook

1. On the taskbar, next to the clock, click the wireless indicator icon.

2. In the menu that appears, click in the network row (you will either see a network indicator icon or the words "No network" on that row).

3. Select the Eduroam network that the Chromebook needs to connect to

4. In the "Join Wi-Fi network" dialog box, set up your connection as follows:

NOTE: If you are using newer versions of Android 11 or higher, you may need to install the "DigiCert Global Root G2 Certificate" for the CA Certificate field.

If you are viewing this on a computer, please browse to this article on your Chromebook and download the certificate from there.

After downloading the certificate, tap "CA certificate" field when connecting to eduroam, choose "Install certificate..." and then select the DigiCert-Global-Root-G2.cer file. Otherwise, follow the manual steps below:

For a manual install, tap Settings, Security, Advanced Encryption & credentials, and then under "Credential storage" tap Install a certificate Wi-Fi certificate. Then in the top left, tap Menu. Under "Open from," tap where you saved the certificate. After selecting a certificate, another field may be shown called "Online Certificate Status". Select "Do Not Validate" for this field. Older Android versions can bypass the certificate by setting CA certificate to (unspecified), Don't Validate, Do Not Verify, left blank or selecting "Use system certificate".

For domain, enter mytru.ca (Student), tru.ca (Staff)

Setting up your connection this way is only required if your device is unable to automatically discover the necessary settings

Connecting with your Android or iOS Smart Device

The getEduroam Application can be downloaded from your smart device's App store

1. Install the app via the link provided above or by going to your app store and searching for "geteduroam"

2. Open the app and enter "Thompson Rivers University" as the institution. It should appear as an option to select after typing.

3. Select Staff or Student for the profile.

4. Enter your correct username format from the examples below and then click 'Connect to Network'

Students	Staff and Faculty

 

5. Your device is now configured and connected to the Eduroam wireless network.

Did the getEduroam app say it configured but your connection to Eduroam failed?

Go back into your wifi settings on your phone and instead of clicking on Eduroam to connect to it, press & hold (or select the "Options" dots for the network) and go into Manage Network Settings/Settings for Eduroam.

Re-type in your password here and click Save/Connect/Submit to save the settings.

If you are still unable to connect to eduroam, proceed to Step 3 for Troubleshooting steps.

Streaming Devices

Apple TV

1. From the main menu, choose Settings
2. Click About or Network
3. Look for the MAC address next to "Ethernet Address" for the wired network or "Wi-Fi address" for the wireless connection.
4. Alternatively, you may find the MAC address printed on the UPC label on the Apple TV box.

Google TV

From Settings, select Network, and then Status. Your MAC address will appear on the screen.

Google home devices

IoT devices like speakers, which require being on the same network as the user's phone for setup and management, cannot be configured because the IoT device would be on the TRU network while the phone is on Eduroam, preventing them from communicating with each other.

Roku

1. Go to the Roku Home screen
2. Select Settings and press the OK button.
3. Select System and press the OK button.
4. Select About and press the OK button.
5. The wired MAC address is listed next to Ethernet MAC Address.

Alternatively, you may be able to find the MAC address on the bottom or back of your Roku. 

Roku TCL TV

From the Roku home screen, select Settings, then Network, then Wi-fi, and then New Wireless Connection. Push Other Options. Scan for networks again, and your Mac address will display on the right.

or

1.  Press the Home button on the remote.

2.  Go to Settings and select OK on the remote.

3.  Go to Network and select OK on the remote.

4.  Go to About.

The MAC address can be found next to Wireless MAC address.

Seiki Smart TV

From Settings, go to Setup, and then Network, and then IP address. Both the wireless and wired MAC addresses are listed on this page.

Fire Stick/TV

1. From the Main Menu go to Settings
2. Select System
3. Then go to About
4. Toggle down to Network
5. Look for the MAC Address (Wi-Fi or wired)

Sony Blu-Ray Disc player

Follow the online instructions from Sony. 

1. Make sure that the Blu-ray Disc player and TV or display device are turned on
2. Using the supplied remote, press Home.
3. Use the left arrow or right arrow to select Setup.
4. Use the up arrow or down arrow to select System Settings.
5. Press Enter.
6. Select System Information.
7. Press Enter.

TiVo

From the TiVo Menu, select Settings, and then choose Phone/Network. Your MAC address will appear on the page that opens.

Vizio Smart TV

Press the Menu button on the remote and select Network, and then Manual Setup. The RJ45 (wired) and/or Wireless MAC address will appear on the screen.

Gaming Consoles

Nintendo DS

To locate the MAC Address­­s of your DS:

1. Select System Settings from the Home menu.
2. Scroll down through the menu and select Internet.
3. The Nintendo Switch console's MAC address will be listed under "System MAC Address."

Nintendo Switch 

1. Select System Settings from the Home menu.
2. Scroll down through the menu and select Internet.
3. The Nintendo Switch console's MAC address will be listed under "System MAC Address."

PS5

1. Start up your PlayStation 5 without a disk in the drive.
2. On the home screen, click on the settings icon (gear) in the top-right corner.
3. Select System.
4. Under System Software, select Console Information.
5. You will see the MAC addresses for LAN cable (Ethernet) and Wi-Fi.

PS4

To locate the MAC Address of your Playstation 4 console:

1. Arrow up and over to Settings in the PS4 menu.
2. Scroll down to Network
3. Scroll down to View Connection Status
4. The MAC Address will be listed next to MAC Address

PS3

To locate the MAC Address of your Playstation 3 console:

1. From the main menu, select Settings.
2. Select System Settings.
3. Select System Information.
4. The MAC Address will then be displayed on the screen.

PSP/PS Vita

To locate the MAC Address of your PlayStation Portable (PSP):

1. Navigate to System Settings
2. Then navigate to System Information, which is where the MAC Address is listed.

Xbox Series X/S

1. Find My Xbox in the Xbox Dashboard and select Settings.
2. Under General, select Network Settings.
3. Select Advanced Settings from the Network Settings tab.
4. You will see the MAC addresses for Wired (Ethernet) and Wireless (Wi-Fi).

Xbox One

To locate the MAC Address of your Xbox One console:

1. Navigate to My Games and Apps
2. Select Settings.
3. Select Network.
4. Select Advanced Settings.
5. The MAC Addresses for the wired and wireless adapters should be displayed.

Xbox 360

To locate the MAC Address of your Xbox 360 wireless adapter:

1. Select System Settings.
2. Select Network Settings.
3. Select Configure Network.
4. Under Basic Settings, check to make sure IP Settings is set to Automatic.
5. Go to Additional Settings.
6. Select Advanced Settings.
7. The MAC Addresses for the wired and wireless adapters should be displayed.

Wii U

To locate the MAC Address of your Wii U console:

1. From the Wii U Menu, select System Settings.
2. Using the left stick, select the Internet icon and press the A button.
3. Select View MAC Address and wait a moment for the MAC Address to be displayed.

Other Devices

Amazon Devices

1. Download the Amazon Alexa app to your phone or computer and sign in with your Amazon account.
2. Connect to the wireless network transmitted by your Echo device.
3. The wireless MAC address for your Echo can be found at the bottom of the Echo Setup screen in the Alexa app.

Amazon Echo

The easiest way to find your MAC address is in the Amazon Alexa app. Choose Settings, then Device Settings, then Echo Dot. It should be listed at the very bottom of the About page and be 12 characters.

Trouble Connecting?

"Forget Network" for Eduroam on your device, turn your Wi-Fi off and then back on. Instructions for how to Forget a WiFi network for specific devices is listed below:

• Forget WiFi on Apple Devices

• Forget WiFi on Apple Computers

• Windows 11:

  • Select Start  > Settings  > Network & Internet

  • Select Wi-Fi , then select Manage Known Networks

  • Select the network you want to forget, then select Forget

• Windows 10:

  • Select the Wi-Fi network icon on the right side of the taskbar, then select Network & Internet Settings

  • Select Wi-Fi , then select Manage Known Networks

  • Select the network you want to forget, then select Forget

If you are on a MacBook and have connected to Eduroam at another university, you will need to remove the Eduroam profile for that university:

1. Go to System Preferences -> Profiles

2. Remove any profiles added from other universities

3. Turn your wifi off and back on again, then try re-connecting to Eduroam

4. If removing the profile fails to correct the issue.  Using cat.eduroam.org to download the mobileconfig profile, go to System Preferences -> Profiles and approve the installation of the profile.

If you are on a laptop, find Eduroam in the list of available networks again and try to re-connect.

If you are on an Android or iOS Smartphone, repeat the instructions above for the GETEDUROAM App.

1. Forget the Eduroam WiFi Network again on your device as per the instructions above

2. In the username field, enter your T-ID if you are a student, or your Staff Username if you are a Faculty/Staff

3. In the password, field enter your password that you use for your TRU Account

4. Under the EAP Method, select PEAP

5. Under the CA certificate, select Don't Validate

6. Under the Phase 2 Authentication, select MSCHAPV2

7. Submit/Save/Connect to save the settings

If you are still unable to connect, you will need to contact the IT Service Desk.

Not all older devices will be able to be connected to the network even with assistance. If this is the case, you will need to acquire a newer device.

Connecting to another institution's Eduroam wifi network

If you are visiting another institution that has Eduroam wifi, log in using your home institution, add your institution's domain at the end of your username.
For example, an SFU student would log in with userid@sfu.ca

TRU individuals visiting another institution would sign into Eduroam using their username@tru.ca and regular password
