Thompson Rivers University uses only 5 GHz Wi-Fi across campus. The older 2.4 GHz network is no longer available.
Most modern devices support 5 GHz and should connect without issues. If your device cannot connect, follow the steps below.
Step 1: Check if Your Device Supports 5 GHz Wi-Fi
Verify with the manufacturer of your device if it supports 5 GHz network. If your device does not support 5 GHz, it cannot connect to Eduroam network.
Step 2: Turn On Wi-Fi and Choose the Correct Network
- Turn Wi-Fi on.
- Select Eduroam network,
- Sign in using your TRU account.
Student login format: TRU ID number, e.g. T00123456.
Employee login format: TRU username, e.g. jsmith.
Avoid connecting to old or saved networks that are no longer used.
Step 3: Restart Your Device
Restarting clears temporary connection issues.
- Save your work.
- Restart your device fully.
- Connect to Eduroam network again after restart.
Step 4: Forget the Eduroam Network and Reconnect
This removes old settings and creates a new connection.
- Open Wi-Fi settings.
- Select the Eduroam network.
- Choose Forget, Remove, or Disconnect.
- Select the network again.
- Sign in with your TRU account.
Step 5: Move to a Better Location
5 GHz Wi-Fi is faster, but it does not travel as far as older signals.
If your connection is weak, move closer to open areas such as:
- Hallways
- Study spaces
- Classrooms
Avoid:
- Basements
- Thick walls
- Areas with heavy obstructions
Step 6: Install Device Updates
Step 7: Test Another Device
Testing helps identify the issue.
- Try connecting a different device to Eduroam network.
- If another device works, your device likely has the issue.
- If no devices connect, there may be a temporary campus issue.
