Microsoft Authentication for Linux Sign-In

Before You Sign In

Returning Linux Users

If you signed in to this Linux computer before the Microsoft Entra authentication changes, your existing documents may be stored under your previous Linux account.

An administrator will need to move these documents to your new account. Do not assume that missing documents have been deleted.

Sign in to Linux

TRU Linux computers use Microsoft Entra to verify your TRU account. When you sign in, the computer will display a QR code and Microsoft device authorization information.

You can complete the authorization by scanning the QR code or opening the link shown on the Linux computer in a web browser.

1. Enter your TRU account

At the Linux login screen, enter your TRU account using the format below:

Students:
Enter your TRU ID followed by @mytru.ca.

Example: T00123456@mytru.ca

Employees:
Enter your TRU username followed by @tru.ca.

Example: jsmith@tru.ca

Then select "Microsoft Entra" as the authorization broker:

2. Authorize the device

The Linux computer will display a QR code and instructions for authorizing the device.

You can authorize the device using either method:

Scan the QR code displayed on the Linux computer with your phone or another device.
Open the link shown on the screen in a web browser and follow the Microsoft sign-in instructions.

You have 2 minutes (120 seconds) to complete the authorization.

If you do not complete the authorization within 120 seconds, the request will expire. Return to the Linux login screen and try again to receive a new authorization request.

3. Sign in to Microsoft

Follow the Microsoft sign-in instructions after scanning the QR code or opening the link.

Sign in using the same TRU account you entered on the Linux computer.

Students: T00123456@mytru.ca

Employees: username@tru.ca

Enter your TRU network password.

Complete Microsoft multi-factor authentication (MFA) if prompted.

4. Complete the Linux sign-in

After Microsoft confirms that the device has been authorized, return to the Linux computer.

The Linux computer will complete the authentication process and ask that you create a local password for recovery.

The local password does NOT have to be the same as your Entra password. If you choose to enter a different password it will NOT change your Microsoft login elsewhere.

Troubleshooting

The authorization request expired

You have 120 seconds to complete the Microsoft authorization.

If the request expires, return to the Linux login screen and try again. A new authorization request will be displayed.

The QR code does not work

Use the link displayed on the Linux screen instead. Open the link in a web browser and follow the Microsoft sign-in instructions.

If the authorization request has expired, restart the Linux sign-in process first.

Microsoft does not accept your password

Confirm that you are using your current TRU network password.

Students: Sign in with your TRU ID followed by @mytru.ca.

Employees: Sign in with your TRU username followed by @tru.ca.

If you cannot sign in to your TRU account, use the Password Reset service under Additional Support.

My documents are missing after signing in

If you used this Linux computer before the Microsoft Entra authentication changes, your documents may still be stored under your previous Linux account.

An administrator will need to move the documents to your new account.

Microsoft authentication succeeds, but Linux does not sign in

Return to the Linux computer and check for additional instructions or error messages.

If the authorization has expired, restart the login process and complete the authorization again within 120 seconds.
