Overview

This article explains how to join a Zoom meeting using a web browser or the Zoom desktop application, and how to test your audio/video setup before joining. These steps help ensure a smooth meeting experience for TRU students, faculty, and staff.

Note: These steps apply to both Windows and macOS versions of the Zoom desktop app. The interface is nearly identical on both.

Prerequisites

A stable Internet connection
Access to a Zoom meeting link
A device with a functional microphone and web cam
Zoom desktop app installed (optional)

Join a Zoom Meeting Using a Web Browser

Click on the meeting invite link

Zoom will load in your browser. Cancel/Dismiss any prompt for opening the Zoom App if it appears, then click Join from Your Browser

Your browser may need you to allow Zoom to use your Microphone and Camera, click on allow if prompted

Once your Microphone and Camera have been turned on, enter your name if prompted, then click the Join button

Change Audio Options

Click the ^ button next to the Mute/Unmute button to open Audio options. In this menu, you can set your Microphone and Speakers, or open additional Audio Settings.

Click Test Speaker & Microphone to start a test of your sound devices. A prompt will appear to guide you through selecting and testing all detected speakers and microphones. Click through the prompts to ensure your selected audio devices are working, or to discover which detected settings will work for your meeting.

Changing Video Options

Click the ^ button next to the Stop/Start Video button to open Camera options. In this menu, you can set your Camera, toggle blur or backgrounds, and open additional Video Settings

Join a Zoom Meeting Using the Desktop App

Click on the meeting invite link

Zoom will load in your browser. Click the Open button from the prompt. If the prompt doesn't show, click on Join from Zoom Workplace app.

The Zoom Desktop App will open. Click Join with Computer Audio. To test your audio setup, click Test Speaker and Microphone.
1. If you started the Sound Test, Zoom will guide you through checking all detected audio devices to identify which to select for your meeting to hear and be heard.

You will now join the meeting.
